Why Study in Women's Studies?

Women's Studies at the University of Ottawa has several attractive features which appeal to our students, who can:

  1. Pursue a major or a minor in Women's Studies in English or in French.

  2. Pursue a Joint Honours Baccalaureate in Women's Studies with either Criminology, Political Studies or Sociology.

  3. Pursue a PhD in Women's Studies, a Master's in Women's Studies or graduate studies in the Collaborative Program in Women's Studies at the Master's level, which aims to combine advanced disciplinary studies with analyses from a women's studies perspective.

  4. Enroll in the numerous courses in Women's Studies (FEM), which analyze the position of women and the construction of gender in society.

  5. Benefit from the knowledge and expertise from the IWS professors and of a large body of professors from various departments, faculties and schools who are engaged in research on women's and gender issues.

  6. Benefit from the presence of top scholars who hold the Canada Research Chair in Gender, Migration and Health; the Joint Chair in Women's Studies (The University of Ottawa and Carleton University share one of five Canadian chairs in women's studies.); and the University of Ottawa/Ontario Women's Health Council Chair in Women's Health.

  7. Meet and exchange with the Bank of Montreal Visiting Scholar in Women's Studies; while pursuing research, the Visiting Scholars offers seminars and workshops, and act as resource-person with our students and faculty.

  8. Attend the Annual Shirley Greenberg Lecture in Women's Studies and the series of Feminist Cafés.

  9. Conduct research at the Canadian Women's Movement Archives, located at the Morisset Library.
