Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Associates
The Faculty is proud to attract the tremendous intellectual wealth that postdoctoral fellows and research associates represent. These scientists are embarking on a quest for complementary expertise or more specialized knowledge in their area of research and, in the process, they play an active role in their unit’s scientific pursuits. For more information, visit the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.
Postdoctoral Fellow
Caroline Caron, Ph.D. (November 2009 - November 2011)
The Institute of Women's Studies is pleased to welcome its first postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Caroline Caron. Dr. Caron, who earned her doctoral degree in communications at Concordia University, is a specialist in the analysis of mediatized discourse, women’s studies, and studies on young people and the media. Her previous research, which received support from the Fonds de recherche sur la société et la culture du Québec (FQRSC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and the Trudeau Foundation, is located within the domain of feminist media studies and has earned her two research awards to date. Her topics have included women’s magazines destined to adolescent girls, discourses on hypersexualization, and young people’s views of these topics. Dr. Caron’s current research, funded by SSHRC, is titled Disengaged? Researching Girls’ Citizenship and Civic Participation. This original project analyzes the meaning and scope of Francophone adolescent girls’ and young women’s involvement in the production of media content such as fanzines, radio programs, video productions distributed on the Internet, and blogs. Unlike more common approaches, this project focuses on adolescent girls and young women as producers rather than consumers of media and culture. Dr. Caron is also chair of the board of directors of Groupe Femmes, Politique et Démocratie (http://www.femmes-politique-et-democratie.com/). You may reach her by email at ccaron@uOttawa.ca.
