About the Department

Welcome to the University of Ottawa's Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Sociology observes and analyzes how human societies emerge, evolve and operate; in the process, it tries to understand and explain the factors and phenomena that shape them. Anthropology, on the other hand, examines simple and complex societies from a variety of social, cultural and physical perspectives.

The department also offers several interdisciplinary programs: international development and globalization; ethics; and population health, among others. What's more, our co-operative education stream and our international exchange opportunities are expanding year after year.

With their diverse backgrounds, our professors are working to shape a curriculum that reflects major western traditions in sociology and anthropology, both European and North American.
