Applications for the Study Research Laboratories
Objectives
The main goals of a study and research laboratory are a) to prompt discussions and exchanges between professors, b) to ease students' integration into graduate studies, c) to share research findings and d) to make the University's expertise better known. With this in mind, the laboratory aims specifically to:
- Establish an interdisciplinary venue for meetings and discussions
- Acquaint the university community (students and professors) and the general public with the research being conducted, and thus help ensure that findings and results are shared more effectively
- Raise the interest of both current and potential students in the research work conducted in the field at the University of Ottawa
- Foster greater interest for interdisciplinary research and studies
- Make it easier to build research teams among professors and both master's and doctoral students alike.
Possible activities
- Conference series tapping into the expertise of not only University of Ottawa professors, but also visiting professors and researchers
- Public debates on current issues and events
- Mini-colloquia on specific themes
- Presentation of ongoing work by professors, students and researchers through discussion groups and research seminars
- Informal gatherings and discussions on events, issues and challenges, so that participants can better grasp the stakes involved and thus broaden and deepen their analyses and research
Structure
Responsibility for the SSSRL will be assigned to a supervisor, who will strike a three-member coordinating committee. A Web site will be launched to publish the objectives, activities and members of the laboratory.
Program management
Laboratory-creation applications must be submitted to the Office of the Dean. Applications must include:
- the proposed name of the Laboratory
- a description of the issue or theme to be studied
- the group's projected activities and operation
- the list of members or participants.
The FAC assesses applications and recommends a final decision to the Executive Committee.
Funding terms and conditions
The Faculty allocates a maximum of $7,000 a year for an assistantship and for the funding of seminars, colloquia and visitor travel. An annual report will be submitted detailing the activities of the Laboratory. Availability permitting, the research assistant will have access to a work-station in a shared office.
SSSRL assessment criteria
How relevant is the research theme or topic to Faulty objectives and to the teaching and research being conducted there?
How many members are involved (at least eight professors required), and how many units are represented?
How cohesive is the group?
How well will students be integrated into laboratory activities?
To what extent will the laboratory heighten the profile of research both on campus and in the broader community?
All laboratories are evaluated every year with these factors in mind:
- the activities of the laboratory
- the number of members (professors)
- the number of students integrated by these members
- the number of research teams spawned through the laboratory's work
- the laboratory's visibility outside the University
- the laboratory's members involvement in international networks.
