  • From 27 January to 1 February 2009, a delegation of about 75 people, with 11 students and two professors from the University of Ottawa, recently participated in the World Social Forum (WSF) in Belém, in the Brazilian Amazon. This initiative, organized by Uni-Alter, was made possible with the support of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Experiential Learning Service of the University of Ottawa.

The objective of UNI-Alter is to build bridges between academia and civil society namely by organizing workshops on engaged research and mixed delegations (students/activists) to participate in different processes linked to social forums throughout the world. UNI-Alter is a local autonomous initiative, the result of alliances and networks between professors from Canadian universities and civil society groups who share the same objectives. This collective currently brings together professors and researchers from l’Université du Québec à Montréal, l’Université de Montréal, the University of Ottawa and l’Université de Sherbrooke, in partnership with many civil society organizations.
