IPC - Who are we?

The Institute will be established at the University of Ottawa – Canada´s University. The staff include:

Directors

Ross Hastings was the Chair of the National Crime Prevention Council from 1994 to 1997, a member of the scientific board of the ICPC and special editor of the Canadian Journal of Criminology’s special issue on crime prevention.

Irvin Waller was the Director General responsible for Canada’s research based program to promote peace and security as a substitute for the death penalty in the 1970´s and founding director general from 1994 to 2000 of the International Centre for Prevention of Crime affiliated with the UN. He has won extensive international recognition for his work on harnessing knowledge for crime prevention and support for victims of crime. He is invited as a key note speaker across the world.

Senior Research Associate

Holly Johnson is Associate Professor of Criminology. She spent twenty years at Statistics Canada was formerly Chief of Research at the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics. She has an established international reputation for her work on violence against women and statistical approaches to prevention and has published widely in these areas.

Research Associate

Melanie Bania is an exceptional doctoral student with an accomplished record of working on reports on evidence based crime prevention locally and nationally, including the Handbook for Canada on implementation of UN crime prevention norms.

Adviser on Municipal Issues

Claude Vézina was formerly deputy director of the International Centre for Prevention of Crime and policy adviser to the Montreal Urban Community on public safety. He has collaborated with more than 10 major cities in Africa on the UN Habitat programme on Safer Cities and is co-author and trainer of the Key to Safer Municipalities.
