Mission and Goal

Mission

To strengthen Canada’s capacity to use evidence and knowledge to prevent crime and victimization.

Goals

  1. Strengthen research, knowledge and evaluation on crime prevention in Canada

    • Develop knowledge about the risks and protective factors associated with offending and victimization
    • Identify effective approaches that reduce crime by tackling these factors
    • Advance knowledge of the most effective, sustainable and responsible approaches to delivering prevention initiatives
    • Foster data and statistical bases for these purposes.
       
  2. Promote advanced learning on evidence based crime prevention in Canada

    • Strengthen and develop masters and doctoral courses focused on knowledge about crime prevention
    • Foster and direct masters, doctoral and post-graduate research on crime prevention in Canada
    • Promote courses, seminars, and other professional development to strengthen the use of knowledge in preventing crime in Canada
       
  3. Collaborate with all orders of government and civil society to apply evidence based crime prevention

    • Foster networks committed to using knowledge to prevent crime
    • Organize conferences and workshops to discuss knowledge on crime prevention and its use
    • Collaborate on activities designed to identify gaps and needs for more effective prevention strategies
       
  4. Disseminate and publish knowledge on evidence based crime prevention

    • Promote public and media interest through an annual lecture, press conferences and so on
    • Maintain a user and media friendly web site that shares knowledge on crime, its costs and its prevention in Canada
    • Publish practical reports and tool-kits as well as academic material to reach those responsible for implementing crime prevention
       
  5. Develop the Institute to achieve the above goals

    • Attract and keep a small but critical mass of leading Canadian experts
    • Seek governmental, private and other funding from diverse sources
    • Be guided by an advisory board of leading Canadian and international professionals
