Ross Hastings
Ross Hastings received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame
(South Bend, IN, USA). He is a professor of Criminology at the University of
Ottawa where he has taught since 1974. His main areas of teaching and research
interest are crime prevention, community mobilization, and the design and
implementation of criminal justice policies and programs.
Ross was the Chair of the National Crime Prevention Council of Canada from 1994 – 1997. He later served as a member of the Steering Committee of the National Crime Prevention Strategy from 1998 – 2000. He has also worked closely with the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime (based in Montreal, Canada), and is a member of their Scientific Committee.
In addition, Ross has worked closely with a number of police and non-governmental organizations on issues relating to organizational change and program innovation. He has consulted with the Ontario Provincial Police, The Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal and the Ottawa Police Service during major reorganization initiatives within these organizations. More recently, he has been involved with a number of local and national organizations (including the Northern Ireland Police Board) concerned with the challenges of community mobilization and partnership development.
His current work also focuses on youth justice and community responses to the needs of young people. He recently participated in a comparison of approaches to youth justice in Canada and France, and on a study of youth justice systems in Europe (sponsored by the Groupe Européen de Recherche sur les Normativités/GERN and the Council of Europe). Currently, he is co-director of a three year project sponsored by the National Crime Prevention Centre on “Harnessing Knowledge to Prevent Crime”.
