The transformation of economic structures and geo-political configurations has created new opportunities as well as new tensions in the developing world. This course will examine the impact of ‘neoliberal’ globalization and its aftermath in one of the poorest countries of South America. The course will examine the changing relations between the state and social movements and the different strategies that have been proposed to achieve socially equitable, ecologically sustainable, and multidimensional development in the context of globalization. It will pay particular attention to the policies of the country’s first indigenous government elected in December 2005. This course is offered in English and the independent study is to be conducted in Spanish.
