Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents
Masters Program
The Faculty of Social Sciences has a minimum funding policy that guarantees at least $16,500 for the first year of study in a Masters program to all eligible students. For those in a program with thesis, a minimum amount of $16,500 will be allocated for the second year of study.
Admission Scholarships are awarded to new students whose admission average is 8.0 / 10 or more and who register full-time and remain a full-time student for the duration of the scholarship (up to 6 consecutive sessions).
If a student receives a major External Scholarship, such as OGS or SSHRC the admission scholarship will be replaced by an Excellence Scholarship.
Excellence Scholarships include:
- Tuition fees for the duration of the external award
- An assistantship during each year of the award; to undertake an assistantship, the student must be able to work at the University of Ottawa.
Masters in Public and International Affairs
Students enrolled full-time in the M.A. in Public and International Affairs, whose admission average is 8.0 / 10 or more, will receive a Graduate Scholarship worth $6,000 per year ($2,000/session), for up to two years of study.
In exceptional cases, the Faculty of Social Sciences will also offer a merit scholarship, ranging from $1,500 to $6,000 at the time of the offer of admission.
Ph.D Program
The Faculty of Social Sciences has a minimum funding policy that guarantees funding of at least $19,000 for each of the four years of doctoral study to all new doctoral students meeting the requirements described below. A fifth year of funding is available under certain conditions.
Admission Scholarships are awarded to new students whose admission average is 8.0 / 10 or more and who register full-time and remain a full-time student for the duration of the scholarship (12 or 15 consecutive sessions).
If a student receives a major External Scholarship, such as OGS or SSHRC the admission scholarship will be replaced by an Excellence Scholarship.

- Tuition fees for the duration of the external award
- An assistantship during each year of the award; to undertake an assistantship, the student must be able to work at the University of Ottawa.
International Students
The Faculty of Social Sciences holds a competition for the allocation of different types of awards and financial support for international students. A committee considers applications submitted by the program to which the student has been offered admission. Funding is not guaranteed to all students who meet the eligibility criteria. Scholarships are awarded until the funds are all allocated.
Students with outstanding records may be considered for a Full International Scholarship which includes:
- A full fee waiver
- Assistantships at the rate offered to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. (see section on Canadian citizens or permanent residents).
Students with a CGPA of 8.0 / 10 may be recommended for a Differential Scholarship which includes:
- A reduction of fees to the same rate as that charged to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
- Assistantships at the rate offered to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. (see section on Canadian citizens or permanent residents).
