Wine and Cheese for Economics Alumni

On April 4, 2012, the Economics Student Association (ESA) of the University of Ottawa organized a wine and cheese event in honour of the new graduates. Over 100 distinguished guests, including alumni, professors and students, came together to celebrate the successes of this year’s cohort. It was a wonderful event enjoyed by all!

At this event, the ESA presented a cheque for the “Canada and the World Economy” speakers’ series. This annual series will attract internationally renowned economics researchers to the campus, benefiting students, researchers and alumni of the University of Ottawa. The gift is the result of the 2012 campus campaign and is significant because it shows the importance of everyone becoming involved to make our university one of the best higher education institutions.

Guests had the opportunity to listen to Sam Boutziouvis, VicePresident of the Canadian Council for Chief Executives and the honorary alumni speaker for the evening. Mr.Boutziouvis received the Faculty of Social Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award in 2010. Despite his busy schedule, Mr.Boutziouvis took the time to prepare a very touching bilingual speech, punctuated with personal anecdotes and quotes from Steven Jobs, and which captivated the new graduates he was addressing as well as everyone else present. His authenticity touched everyone. We greatly appreciated the unity he displayed with his fellow graduates from all generations, not to mention his prediction of a very promising future for our newest economists!

It was a time of celebration for everyone from students to Dean Mérette, an economics professor himself, to Victoria Barham, Chair of the Department of Economics. Once again, she is able to say: mission accomplished!

Economics alumni -- stay tuned for next year’s programming, which will be even more enlightening.
