Please join us for the first event in 2009 of the Security and Intelligence Roundtable, a series of public lectures and discussions organized by the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs of the University of Ottawa, co-sponsored by the Canadian Association for Security and Intelligence Studies (CASIS, www.casis.ca).

“Omar Khadr: Guantanamo’s Child”

Michelle Shephard
Toronto Star National Security Reporter

Tuesday, January 13, 2009
12:30 to 2 p.m.
Odell House
180 Waller Street, Ottawa

Omar Khadr is the only citizen of a western nation still. held at Guantanamo Bay, where he is currently on trial for war crimes. Khadr is a Canadian citizen who was 15 years old when he was shot and captured in Afghanistan in 2002 by US forces and accused of throwing a grenade that killed a US soldier. His case reflects all the difficulties of the Guantanamo Bay system and will inevitably be at the heart of the Obama administration’s decision about how to close down the camp.

Michelle Shephard has covered the story of Omar Khadr since his capture in July 2002. She has visited Guantanamo Bay on numerous occasions and published her account of the Khadr case, Guantanamo’s Child: The Untold Story of Omar Khadr in 2008 (Toronto: John Wiley and Sons).

In the course of her career in journalism, Michelle Shephard has won Canada’s two top newspaper awards—the National Newspaper Award for investigations and the Governor General’s Michener Award for public service journalism.

The Ottawa Roundtable on Security and Intelligence is open to faculty and students, to CASIS members, government officials, interested members of the public and the media. No registration for these events is required and no fee is charged.
