About the Department
Since its inception in 1968, the Department of Criminology has grown to a vibrant community of 34 full-time professors. The Department is home to the Laboratory for Justice Studies and Research, is associated with the Institute for the Prevention of Crime, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Citizenship and Minorities and is proud to support research in areas as diverse as policing, violence against women, drug policy, sex work, prisons, youth, media representations of crime, political violence, human rights and cybercrime.
Our bilingual program enables students to pursue their studies in either French and English (or both!) and gives students a strong grounding in the francophone and anglophone research literatures. Situated in downtown Ottawa, we are also close to the political, legal and administrative institutions that drive Canadian criminal policy, and our students are able to put their academic knowledge into practice through our 360 hour internship program.
