Mr. Giovanni Di Girolamo obtained a degree in Political Sciences/International Relations at the Istituto Universitario Orientale of Naples (IUO). He later completed post-graduate studies in International Relations, Economics, International Trade and Business Administration.
Between 1987 and 1990, Mr Di Girolamo occupied prestigious positions at the Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche (CNR) on International Trade issues (Italy); the International Trade Center (UNCTAD/GATT) in Geneva, Switzerland; and the United Nations/Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Santiago, Chile.
He joined the European Commission in 1992 and worked at the EC Delegation in Lagos, Nigeria. Then, in 1995, he was posted as Head of Section and Chargé d'Affaires at the European Commission Delegation in Damascus, Syria. In 2000, he was appointed Head of the Section on Economic Reform/Institution Building and later Head of Operations at the European Commission Delegation in Sofia, Bulgaria. From 2004 to 2008, Mr Di Girolamo worked at the European Commission in Brussels.
Mr Di Girolamo joined the European Commission's Delegation to Canada in August 2008 as Counsellor and Head of Political and Public Affairs Section, and was promoted to the position of First Counsellor in November, 2008.
