Le caractère particulier des systèmes de partis officiels dans les États du Moyen Orient est un facteur déterminant - et souvent restrictif – de l’ampleur des réformes politiques substantielles. Plus particulièrement, ce facteur détermine les possibilités d’intégration des partis Islamistes au sein d’un système pluraliste de compétition politique constitutionnelle. Afin de démontrer cette constatation, Hugh Roberts se penchera sur deux cas particuliers: l’Algérie et l’Égypte.

Hugh Roberts est spécialiste en Histoire et en Politique de l’Algérie et de l’Egypte. Il est l’auteur de The Battlefield-Algeria – Studies in a Broken Polity (2003).

The specific character of formal party systems in Middle East states is a key factor determining ­ and often, in reality, severely limiting - the scope for substantive political reform in general and the possibilities for incorporating Islamist politic parties within a pluralist framework of constitutional political competition in particular. To illustrate this general point, Hugh Roberts will focus on two specific cases: Algeria and Egypt.

Hugh Roberts is an authority in the History and politics of Algeria and Egypt. He is the author of The Battlefield Algeria – Studies in a Broken Polity (2003).
